Nightwish is a Finnish symphonic/power metal band, founded in 1996 by Tuomas Holopainen, along with Emppu Vuorinen and Tarja Turunen.

Initially, the band was conceived as an acoustic project. Their first recordings included several acoustic songs, which were featured on the album "Angels Fall First". In 1997, after drummer Jukka Nevalainen joined them, they turned towards metal.

Most of the lyrics and arrangements for the songs are the work of the band's founder and keyboardist, Tuomas Holopainen. The band's success is partly due to the vocals performed by Tarja Turunen, who studied classical and opera singing in Germany. After joining, the band's bassist, Marco Hietala, also became the second vocalist.

Nightwish's musical style is described as epic metal, power metal, metal opera, and symphonic metal. Tuomas Holopainen, in a statement, described Nightwish's music as "melodic heavy metal with female vocals."

The band has had two world tours – "From Wishes to Eternity" in 2001 and "Once Upon a Tour" in 2004/05. Their first tour mainly covered countries in Western Europe and Scandinavia. With their second tour, "Once Upon a Tour," which concluded on October 21, 2005, at the Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, the band performed concerts in many countries around the world: Romania, Canada, USA, Japan, Germany, etc. After the final concert, the other band members handed Turunen a letter explaining that they no longer wished for her to be a member due to her attitude towards the band. The influence of her husband, Marcelo Cabuli, was also cited as a factor. For subsequent albums, Tarja Turunen was replaced by Anette Olzon. Surprisingly, on October 1, 2012, in the middle of the tour promoting the band's new album, Anette Olzon was released after 5 years of collaboration and replaced by the Dutch singer Floor Jansen.
