Iron Maiden is a heavy metal band formed in London, UK. It is among the biggest, most successful, and best-selling (over 100 million copies worldwide) heavy metal bands of all time. The band has released 17 studio albums, 5 "greatest hits" compilations, 12 live albums, and 4 box sets. They won the Ivor Novello Awards for International Achievement in 2000.
Maiden's mascot, Eddie, has become a central figure on the band's album covers and also appears at concerts. Eddie was originally drawn by Derek Riggs, but there are also numerous incarnations by Melvyn Grant. He also features in the computer game Ed Hunter, as well as in many books, comics, and other merchandise. Iron Maiden became famous thanks to their excellent style. The melodic riffs in the heavy metal style, the lyrics, and the vocals are instantly recognizable. The band is also known for its down-to-earth approach to its music, energetic and unforgettable concerts, and its dedication and devotion to its fans.
Many of their song lyrics are about the history of England or are based on books or films such as: Children of the Damned, The Duellists, The Clansman, Aces High, Paschendale, Revelations, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, The Wicker Man, The Prisoner, Lord of the Flies, Where Eagles Dare, From Here To Eternity, Out of the Silent Planet, To Tame A Land (based on Frank Herbert's novel "Dune"), The Trooper (based on Lord Tennyson's poem "The Charge of the Light Brigade"), Rime of the Ancient Mariner, which uses words by Samuel Coleridge, and Man on the Edge (based on the film "Falling Down").
The band has also headlined some of the major music events such as Ozzfest, Monsters of Rock, Rock in Rio, and Download Festival.
Iron Maiden is ranked 24th on VH1's "100 Greatest Hard Rock Artists/Bands," and according to Kerrang magazine, they are the best band of the last 25 years. They are also ranked fourth on MTV's "10 Greatest Heavy Metal Bands of All Time."
