Alice in Chains is an American rock band popular in the 1990s.

Their unique style, blending dark harmonic melodies with sharp guitar riffs, made them equally well-received in both the alternative grunge scene and metal circles.

The band was formed in Seattle in 1987 and became part of the Seattle grunge wave in the late 80s and early 90s. They achieved widespread popularity with their 1992 album Dirt, which earned them commercial fame, atypical for most Seattle-based alternative bands.

Alice in Chains is one of the most successful grunge bands alongside Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam. The band was formed in 1987 by Layne Staley – vocals, Jerry Cantrell – guitar, Mike Starr on bass, and Sean Kinney – drums. The first recording they released was the EP "We Die Young" after signing a contract with a company. The subsequently released album "Facelift" and the single "Man In The Box" brought the band great success and placed them on the international stage. The following years were successful for the band. After the release of the albums "Dirt" (1992), "Jar Of Flies" (1994), "Alice In Chains" (1995). The band's concerts were aggressive performances, with "Puddle of Mudd" as the opening act. Layne Staley was often at the limit of his vocal and physical abilities. When he broke his leg, he refused to stop the tour and even sang in a wheelchair. In 1996 and 1999, "Unplugged" and "Music Bank" were released. This was followed by "Greatest Hits" in 2001. 2002 was the last year for "Alice In Chains" with Layne Staley after his death on April 5 from a speedball overdose. The band's vocalist had been in depression after the death of his girlfriend. April became the fatal month for grunge after Nirvana's vocalist Kurt Cobain committed suicide in April 1994.
